Tongeren and idyllic Haspengouw
Once you’ve visited the Gallo-Roman Museum, you can set about exploring the oldest city in Belgium and its rich cultural and historical heritage. Discover the Roman and medieval city walls, marvel at the Gothic Basilica of Our Lady and the religious art in its treasure-house. Greet the statue of Ambiorix on the Grote Markt, stroll round the Beguinage, walk under the Moeren Gate and enjoy the tranquillity of the magical Roman ambulatory.
There are any number of little cafés and nice places to eat, shops and plenty to see and do. Every Sunday morning the largest antique and bric-à-brac market in the Benelux is held in Tongeren. The de VELINX cultural centre is the home of art and culture, and then of course there’s the annual Flanders Basilica Festival.
If time is not an issue, then why not make a long weekend of it and explore the magnificent Haspengouw as well? Picturesque parishes, castles and square farmhouses, romantic orchards, an endless network of cycle paths, tasty regional dishes, great guest accommodation... There’s no better place to slow down!
